Located in the south of central Turkey, southeast of Ankara, the moon-view region of Cappadocia is famous for its unique geological formations called fairy chimneys. Large, cone-shaped formations were formed over time as the surrounding soft volcanic tuffs were eroded. Past cultures shaped these formations to be used as houses and castles (such as Üçhisar Castle), and even cities that were completely underground, such as Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, were also used as hiding places by early Christians. The vicinity of Kayseri is like a gateway to this region.
